Revamping your Website

Typically a website is made up of 3 components, the backend, the frontend and the data. It is possible for you to change any of these without effecting the others. For example you can change the front end which is the design of the website to give it a new look without effecting the data or structure of the site.
Functionality can be added to the backend of the website leaving all the current content and interface the same. This is great if you need to update your website but your budget isn't enough to cater for a new design and the backend of the website together, so you can split this into two steps and in the mean time until the website has been totally completed and still in phase 1 you still get added functionality from the new interface or added functionality from the newly implemented backend.
